PXE over VLAN’s using DHCP, IP helpers and SCCM

At work we need to deploy Windows 7 to client machines. Wanting to use Pre Boot Environment (PXE) over VLAN’s we ran across some problems.

One of those problems is that PXE cannot go past routers. You have to tell the PXE-client where the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server will be and where the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) server is.

At first we used DHCP options 66 and 67. No luck there. Didn’t work.

Searching for solutions i noticed a technet article stating that DHCP needs no options set for PXE.

Solution is setting IP helpers on the routers involved. We had 1 IP helper pointing to the DHCP server so we added another IP helper pointing to the SCCM (with the PXE-role) server.

After doing so the clients were getting IP addresses and getting advertisements run on.

Deploying Windows7 could start!

I hope this was informative for you.
